Dental Crowns  and Bridges at The White House Dental

At “The White House Dental,” we recommend Dental Crowns to cover a damaged tooth entirely beyond repair with a filling, inlay, or Onlay. A crown restores the strength & stability of your teeth. On the other hand, a bridge is a series of crowns that bond together & ‘bridge’ the gap created by the missing teeth. You see, crowns and bridges are essentially the same things – however, they’re used for different reasons.

Dental Crowns

When the top of your tooth is lost due to decay, not much space is left for the crown to fit. A post is placed inside the tooth to gain retention, which forms a peg on top and acts as a seat for the crown. A post crown is usually a better option than having the tooth extracted with a subsequent denture or bridge. But post crowns last shorter than typical crowns.

When a tooth is heavily decayed, it’s more likely to get fractured and, more importantly, lose some tooth substance. The greater risk is that a fracture line may go below the gum’s margin, making restoration more difficult. It is very important to see our dentist at The White House Dental regularly to avoid this situation.

Dental Bridges

If a tooth needs to be extracted or is already missing, a dental bridge may be a fixed solution. A bridge stands from crowns bonded or fused. With a bridge, it is possible to replace missing teeth without a denture or dental implant. However, we file down teeth on both sides of the gap to accept the bridge structure.

Crowns and Bridges have many benefits for your teeth

We can use dental crowns to improve the appearance of your teeth. However, more conservative cosmetic dentistry techniques, such as veneers, inlays, onlays, bonding, and more, had replaced some instances when dental crowns were used to achieve aesthetic goals.

Bridges are most commonly used to cover a space if you’re missing one or more teeth. They’re cemented to natural teeth or even implants surrounding the space where your tooth used to be. Apart from strengthening a damaged tooth, crowns & bridges can also be used to improve a tooth’s appearance, shape, alignment & dental occlusion (bite).

Gaps left by missing teeth can cause the remaining ones to shift, resulting in a bad bite. Crowns & Bridges help prevent this from happening, and recovery is quick with them. It’s not uncommon for teeth to be sensitive for a few days, but if you feel uncomfortable, please contact “The White House Dental” team as further adjustments might be necessary. With care, crowns and bridges last 5-15 years or some significantly longer. You need to avoid chewing things such as ice, popcorn, nutshells, kernels, etc., to avert the risk of breakage with crowns or bridges.
